After working with funeral homes for over 20 years, I’ve discovered that a simple strategy for growing a business is often the best course of action. A simple strategy that is fully implemented outperforms a complex strategy that is only partially implemented every time.
The first step in my 2025 5-Step Funeral Home Growth Formula is called Core Strategy. As you might expect, the best core strategy is always the simplest. Let me share how this step can help your business grow.
Not every part of the funeral home industry is growing. Some areas are thriving, while others are shrinking. The key is to figure out which parts of your local market are growing and focus on those.
For example, many funeral homes are seeing success by offering celebrant services to families without a church. Others are specializing in same-day traditional funerals. While full-service traditional 2-day funerals are in decline, these are areas where demand is increasing.
This idea comes from The Star Principle by Richard Koch. It explains that businesses that lead in fast-growing markets usually see the best results. By focusing on a growing niche and becoming the top provider in your community, you’ll attract more families and increase profits.
I’ve seen this strategy work again and again. One of my clients built their business by serving immigrant families and traditional funerals followed by a ship-out. Another focused on celebrant-led services and became the local expert. Both grew their businesses by concentrating on the growing portion of their markets.
Here’s the bottom line: if you try to focus on every possible call in the market, you’ll spread yourself too thin and waste money. But if you narrow your focus to a growing part of the market, you’ll see real results.
This is just the first step in my 5-step formula. If you want to learn the rest of the steps to grow your funeral home, I invite you to watch my full webinar.
